GAO reports $36.7 billion worth of payment errors
In a report released by the Government Accountability Office, the National Repository of Medicaid created an estimated $36.7 billion worth of payment errors in 2017. This is a 254% increase from the $14.4 billion in payment errors from 2013. To curb such payment errors, CMS’s will focus on increasing the information scope and data integrity of state-reported data, using the Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System (T-MSIS). The objective for using T-MSIS is that it alleviates the reporting burden form the states and should enhance program integrity activities, thus lowering payment errors. As of today, the CMS and GAO do not have a plan or timeframe for full implementation of the T-MSIS technology.
